Student Projects 2018

The Field Ecology course from Lincoln School, Providence, R.I. visited the Marine Biological Laboratory in the Fall. Prior to their visit, students chose topics from stripedbassmagic.org and then came to the MBL to collect data and visit with scientists. Under the guidance of their teacher, Alexandra Ellsworth, seniors Katie Ginn, Jacque Reynolds, Natalie Stanchina and Cecily Russo and rising junior Keira Murphy developed striped bass Lesson Plans on Human impact, Migration and Predatory-Prey Relationships.
Sandwich High School science teacher Beth Simmons spent a portion of the summer supervising three rising seniors, Morgan Howes, Michael Stack and Steve Tanguilig, who conducted striped bass research on conditioning, food preference and feeding in response to magnetism. Beth developed a lesson plan on magnetoreception.
Laurel Barnett, a rising sophomore at a Westwood High School, MA, conducted research using sonar and developed Lesson Plans on Designing an Experiment and on Sonar/Echolocation.
Darya Khodahkak, a senior at Harrison High School, NY, conducted research utilizing acoustic tagging of striped bass and developed a Lesson Plan on nano-microplastic pollution and the possible movement of these pollutants up the striped bass food chain.
Jolie Ganzell, a rising sophomore at Great Mills High School, MD, conducted research on environmental factors that may affect the position of schools of striped bass.
Tae Rugh, a rising senior at Menlo-Atherton High School, CA, designed and built an underwater ROV utilizing bilge pump motors.
Ian Hinkle, a rising senior at Falmouth Academy, Falmouth, MA, conducted research as part of a science fair project on identification of individual striped bass based on the aberrations in their stripe patterns. As part of the project, Ian built an underwater SeaPerch ROV, attached a GoPro camera and took pictures of striped bass.
Andrea Sofia Diaz, a student at Colegio Marista, San Juan, Puerto Rico, continues to identify striped bass based on the aberrations in their stripe patterns. She has documented the return of many fish to Eel Pond, Woods Hole, MA, based on their stripe patterns.
Mikaere Todd, a senior at Tamalpais High School, CA, researched locations where striped bass congregate during the summer months on Cape Cod and the Islands.
